Plot Summary
The world is turned upside down when dungeons suddenly appear and monsters appear in the world. Some humans suddenly have the abilities to fight the monsters and they are ranked from E-S. E being the humans with the least abilities and S being the best. Jinwoo is ranked as an E-hunter. Hunter ranks can never be changed unless they go through a reawakening and even then they can never level up. He is known as the worst hunter out there, but nevertheless he continues to help fight in dungeons so that he can take care of his sister who is in college trying to become a doctor and his mother’s medical bills who is suffering from a mysterious illness known as the “sleeping sickness.”
On one such dungeon raid, the dungeon is defeated, but they find a second dungeon which is incredibly strange. As a team they decide to do it but soon realize that the dungeon is incredibly dangerous and has terrifying god-like statue monsters that wipe much of their team out in seconds, but thanks to Jinwoo’s quick thinking he is able to help them get through the riddles. However, by the end the entire team leaves Jinwoo as he sacrifices his life for the team and yet miraculously despite losing limbs and knowing he is about to die he wakes up in a hospital with limbs intact and alive. His level is re-tested as they suspect he might have had a “second awakening” due to his survival, but he is still E-rank. They leave, but what Jinwoo doesn’t tell them is that he can now see a special screen in front of him with tasks that he must now accomplish or face penalties. What does it mean? Why are they there? He soon finds out that he must do these tasks and as he does his rank rises quickly and he becomes the only Hunter in the world to be able to Level-Up.

Why Do I like Solo Leveling?
Solo Leveling is top tier fun. It’s about a young man who wants to help his family and is willing to sacrifice so much to do so. He is quite selfless, but the Korean animation does raise some ethical questions. What happens when the system makes him kill actual human beings and not monsters? This does become an ethical conundrum for Jinwoo despite the fact that these humans are evil people. He is trying to be good, but the system is turning him dark despite his best efforts as he must do what the system wants him to do for the most part.
The music is fun, the visuals are lovely, and every episode is full of action. The introduction of a small bit of romance seems imminent and Jinwoo is full of rizz as he changes drastically from what he is like in the beginning to how the show progresses. His confidence is untouchable which makes this all the more fun to watch.
Director Background:
The director is Shunsuke Nakashige. He is well-known and has done other RPG-type anime including Sword Art Online and Sailor Moon Crystal. He is the key animator for many different series as well.
Critical Evaluation for the Series
The series is fantastic, but it is bloody and violent. Some people may be opposed to this, but I think otherwise this is the only real problem. Also, most of the S-rank hunters appear to be male, but there are some female ones. I would have liked to see more female ones. There are some women throughout the show that fall for Jinwoo or crush on him, but he does not seem interested in any as of yet. He only has one goal and that is to level-up.
Creative Use for a Library Program
Solo Leveling is a manhwa so having a read and watch-along with an anime/manga club would be so much fun. The animation comes out every Saturday so come and watch along with others!
Speed Round Show Talk
Portals have opened all around the Earth releasing dangerous monsters, but some humans have gained amazing abilities to fight them. Jinwoo is the lowest E-ranked hunter, but almost dying to a terrifying god-like monster turns him into the only hunter who can level-up and he takes that opportunity and makes it his mission to be the best hunter in the world.
Potential Challenge Issues and Defense Preparation:
The bloody fighting with all of the monsters and the fighting with the some humans in one episode who sometimes become “monsters” on Jinwoo’s display screen will absolutely be a problem for some parents.
In defense, I do want to point out that despite the violence, for the most part it is quite tame in all other aspects. There is not much swearing, there is not much in the way of sex in any way shape or form, and for the most part the violence is very much in a fantasy world and it is against monsters. Jinwoo does not use guns, his preferred method is with a blade which I think also makes this so much more fun and martial arts style which is an aesthetic I can really appreciate. The animation is meant to be enjoyed for the beautiful art and the really cool battle scenes.
Reason for Inclusion:
I think that this Korean animation is the current hotness right now. It is number one on Crunchyroll and each episode brings in a ridiculous amount of views. It is what everyone is watching – I can’t get away from it which is the biggest reason I decided to include it.
Where To Watch and Is it Coming Back?
Solo Leveling can be currently watched on Crunchyroll both dubbed and subbed although the dub comes out about 2 weeks after the sub. It is currently on season 2 with season 3 debuting in 2026.
